To wrap up the final day’s events, Matthew Mitcham has won GOLD and Australia’s third medal at this meet with an outstanding performance in the 10 metre platform final tonight. This is the event in which Mitcham won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, once again beating the strong Chinese divers into the minor placings, on their home turf.
Mitcham took the lead in the third round of the final with a flawless display picking up perfect 10’s and a score of 99.00, with his reverse three and a half tuck dive. Mitcham’s new dive, an armstand back double with a two and a half twist, also boosted his points tally. It is only the third time he has used this dive in international competition.
Mitcham was nervous going into the final but scored consistently high scores in all six rounds,,to finish with a score of 562
“ It is the second time I have beaten the Chinese on their home ground. The Chinese crowd is very supportive of me and they appreciated the good diving” said Mitcham
“ Even though this is my second Personal Best (PB) in a month, I still don’t feel I have dived my best and there is still room for improvement before London 2012 ” Matthew said.
“ My next goal is selection in the Australian team at next month’s Commonwealth Games Trials and this week has been great preparation for those trials” said Mitcham.
The Australian team finished this World Cup ” benchmark” event, with a creditable three medals including Mitchams gold, Melissa Wu and Alexandra Croak’s silver in the 10m Platform synchronised event and and Melissa Wu’s bronze in the 10m Platform individual event.
